Curiosity is one of the human primordial idiosyncrasy. Everybody wants to learn something. In learning, you are able to annihilate your thirst for knowledge. Indeed, being curious leads us to explore, investigate and learn.

Last night, before I went to sleep, I am really thinking for a new post that will truly bequeaths new information to my blog readers. I came up to a point or an idea to partake with you. Actually, its just a common expression we usually hear if we are too tired of enumerating something. This is already a congruous word to you but I am curious about this. In fact I, myself is also using this word to omit coherent continuation of some sort of series of descriptions and thoughts. You know what I meant, and YES! Its about the word "ETC."

According to my source, "etc" stands for Et Cetera (In English contexts pronounced /ɛˈsɛtərə/) is a Latin expression  portends "and other things" or "and so forth". It is taken directly from the Latin expression which literally means "and the rest (of such things)" and is a loan-translation of the Greek "και έτερα" (kai hetera; "and the others"). Et means "and" and cetera means "the rest". This word is already accepted as correct by many dictionaries. Typically the abbreviated versions should always be followed by a full stop period and always be preceded by a comma.

After I'm done reading the behind facts about the word "etc", I come to speculate things which totally bothers me. As an individual, as a student, why we need to stop and says etc. if we have that broad ideas in our mind to share with others. Nevertheless, for me saying etc. somehow implies that we are making others believe that we know more than we actually do. Thus, the word etc. stands for End of Thinking Capacity.

Why? As you've said, it means "and so forth." or "and the rest." Unless they say otherwise, people using it don't say they know more than they do. Listing everything sometimes isn't practical and doesn't mean we're too tired to list them.

If I say to my sister I'm living with "I'm going to go to the grocery store. I'm going to buy fruit, vegetables, meat etc." she's not going to think I'm lazy. She knows what I'm getting is what I usually get from the supermarket.

There's nothing wrong with abbreviations. They help make life simpler.

  • Its just the source saying etc is "and so forth", but I have also my point that there are sometimes paeople saying it for the sake they've already going beyond their limits. I just don't want to go with the flow. I am just thinking for the other sides of this word...But love criticisms though! Thanks for the comment!

  • It's not just wikipedia saying it. It's also the dictionary.

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/etc.

Like I said people use it because it's conveinient. Just because it's conveinient doesn't mean it's lazy. Sure you don't have to go with the flow. But I'm just saying etc's not a lazy word to use in english. Even universities use it.

  • I am too bro!! I knew its meaning, thats why Ive mentioned above that its already accepted. Am I saying etc a lazy word? You are the one who said it! I am just writing a post of new side of it!..

  • I wasn't the one that said it was lazy. You gave the impression it was and that if you used it your thinking capacity's ended. I'm just giving the english side lol.

  • its not lazy, you are totally wrong...I am thinking its lazy though! You think it, not me! Well yeah sometimes, saying etc does implies that!

  • Nope I don't think it. But you said it does imply it. You're talking about my native language and saying a word in it means something else. However that's not the case.
